WCHM Wood Crusher Hammer Mill

From branches and wood offcuts to finely ground biomass — made in Lebanon.

The Mechaniqua WCHM Series combines a cutting disc fitted with blades and a hammer-grinding system in one machine. The blades cut incoming branches and larger wood pieces, while the hammers reduce the material further before it passes through the installed screen.

This combined process allows the WCHM to produce material finer than conventional wood chips, making it suitable for wood-waste reduction and preparation for further biomass processing.

Available in seven sizes, with electric, gasoline, diesel and tractor PTO configurations, the WCHM serves farms, workshops, commercial wood processors and biomass producers.

How the WCHM Works

Processing stage Function
1. Cutting Blades mounted on the cutting disc cut branches and larger wood pieces into smaller sections.
2. Hammer grinding Rotating hammers further reduce the material through impact.
3. Screening and discharge Reduced material passes through the installed screen and exits the machine.

The screen influences the final particle size. Smaller openings generally produce finer material but reduce throughput. Particle shape and dimensions also depend on the wood’s fibre structure, moisture and operating conditions.

Suitable Materials

  • Tree branches and pruning waste.
  • Small logs within the selected model’s feed-size limits.
  • Wood offcuts and appropriately sized timber pieces.
  • Wood chips.
  • Clean agricultural wood waste and similar woody biomass.

Material must fit safely through the inlet and remain within the machine’s operating limits. Remove nails, screws, stones and other foreign objects before processing.

The inlet opening is not the same as the recommended maximum branch diameter. Contact Mechaniqua before processing unusual, contaminated or treated materials.

Performance figures are approximate selection guidelines. Actual output depends on wood species, hardness, moisture, incoming dimensions, screen opening, feeding consistency, component condition and available drive power.

Maximum branch diameter represents an upper feed-size guideline, not continuous production at that diameter. Hard, dense, wet or irregular wood may require smaller feed sizes. Performance with engine or PTO drives must be confirmed for the selected configuration.

Screen Selection and Pellet Preparation

Select the screen according to the required output and the next processing stage.

Finer ground material Smaller openings, generally with reduced production capacity.
Coarser material Larger openings, generally allowing higher throughput.
Pellet-machine feedstock A 3 mm screen may be suitable where finely prepared material is required. Confirm compatibility with the pellet machine.

Grinding does not replace drying. Material moisture must be appropriate for the downstream process.

Choosing a Starting System

Starting system Characteristics
DOL — Direct-on-Line Simple starting arrangement with high starting current. Requires an electrical supply capable of accelerating the machine.
Star-Delta Reduces initial starting current and starting torque. Requires a compatible motor and sufficient torque to accelerate the unloaded rotor.
VFD — Variable-Frequency Drive Provides controlled acceleration and adjustable operating settings. Selected and configured according to the motor and machine requirements.

A VFD does not increase the motor’s rated power or replace the need for an adequately sized electricity supply. Machine speed must remain within the operating range specified by Mechaniqua.

380V Three-Phase Versions

The table below provides preliminary installation planning values for DOL and star-delta configurations.

Cable examples assume copper conductors, PVC insulation, one ungrouped surface-clipped cable, approximately 30°C ambient temperature and a cable route of up to approximately 25 metres.

²Supply-breaker ratings are preliminary candidates, not motor overload settings. Final selection must account for starting current, trip characteristics, fault-breaking capacity and coordination with the cable and motor protection.

³4G means three phase conductors plus protective earth. A neutral conductor must be added where required by the supplied control panel. These examples refer to the incoming machine supply, not the motor leads between a star-delta starter and its motor.

Final cable sizes and protection must be verified by a qualified electrician. Longer cable runs, enclosed installation, grouped cables, higher temperatures and voltage-drop requirements may require larger conductors. Installed motor and control-panel specifications take priority.

WCHM250 — 220V Single-Phase VFD Version

For locations without a 380V three-phase supply, the WCHM250 is available with a suitable VFD operating a three-phase motor from a 220V single-phase input.

Conductors Line, neutral and protective earth

This configuration requires a dedicated supply and is not suitable for a standard 16 A household socket.

The 220V DOL version requires separate electrical sizing according to its installed motor.

VFD Supply and Motor Protection

For VFD-equipped machines, input cables and protective devices must be selected using the actual drive’s rated input current and manufacturer requirements. Motor current alone is insufficient to size the VFD supply circuit.

Motor overload protection must match the installed motor and starter arrangement. Maintain suitable earthing, isolation and ventilation around the motor and control panel.

Repeated overheating or operation above the motor’s permitted continuous current requires reduced feeding and investigation of the cause.

Generator and Solar Compatibility

Generator and solar-inverter compatibility must be assessed against:

  • Supply voltage and number of phases.
  • Continuous output capacity.
  • Motor-starting capability and selected starter.
  • Other equipment operating on the same supply.

Motor kW alone is not sufficient to select a generator or solar inverter. Provide Mechaniqua with the supply equipment specifications before ordering.

Gasoline and Diesel Versions

Fuel-powered configurations are available for smaller models where an adequate electrical supply is unavailable.

Combustion engines must operate outdoors, away from enclosed working areas and building air intakes.

Tractor engine horsepower differs from available PTO horsepower. Final compatibility depends on available PTO power, operating speed, transmission ratio, material and required throughput.

PTO speed, shaft, coupling, mounting and guarding requirements are confirmed for the selected machine. Operate only at the PTO speed specified by Mechaniqua.

Choose WCHM when your material requires initial cutting before grinding. Choose WHM when the material is already appropriately sized for hammer milling.

Operation and Maintenance

  • Start with the grinding chamber clear and allow the rotor to reach its specified operating speed.
  • Feed material progressively and consistently.
  • Adjust feeding to the material, screen opening and available power.
  • Keep the screen and discharge path clear.
  • Inspect blades, hammers, belts and bearings regularly.
  • Follow the supplied lubrication and maintenance instructions.
  • Keep guards fitted during operation.
  • Stop, isolate and wait for the rotor to come to a complete standstill before opening, cleaning or servicing the machine.
